Years ago I telephoned my friend Charles “Tremendous” Jones at his office in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I asked him what he was doing. His answer startled me. He said, “I’m worshipping away.” I asked him a second time, “You’re what?”, and he answered the same, “I’m worshipping away.” Then I said, “But you’re at work”, and he said, “Don’t you know that Scripture says “Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart as working for the Lord, not for men,…” (Colossians 3:23)
Then I foolishly asked about his health. His answer startled me again. He said, “Let’s not waste time talking about ourselves; we’re already dead.” Then he quoted the Apostle Paul saying, “I’ve been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me and the life I live in this body I live by faith.” Wow! Now that is what you call the renewing of your mind.
Today I have cherished memories of that call because it speaks volumes to me of how the Christian life is to be lived.
Now why should we live according to Colossians 3:23 as my friend “Tremendous” did? Remember what Verse 23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart as working for the Lord, not for men,…” The answer for the why is in the next verse, Verse 24 which says, “…since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
LIFE LESSON: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (I Corinthians 10:31)
My friend Charles Jones has gone to be with the Lord. But if he were here today, he would say to all of us from God’s Word, “be transformed by the renewing of your mind, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to His good purpose.”
Thank you for your continued prayers and support. You are great partners in Christ.
